Economic analysis of soilless and soil-based greenhouse cucumber production in Turkey Scientia Agricola
Engindeniz,Sait; Gül,Ayse.
Since the onset of the commercial application of soilless culture, this production approach has evoluted at a fast pace, gaining popularity among growers throughout the world. As a result, a lot of information has been developed by growers, advisors, researchers, and suppliers of equipment and substrate. This study aimed to determine the cost and return of soilless greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) production and to prepare a sample budget for growers. Soilless cultivation is an alternative production method for Turkish growers and it is being practised on a commercial basis on 180 ha. Cost and return budgets can be useful for growers because they allows growers to compare total production cost and revenue varying grower type, production time,...

ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF AGRICULTURAL POLICY REFORM: AN INTERREGIONAL COMPARISON AgEcon
Painter, Kathleen M.; Young, Douglas L..
Mathematical programming results revealed that moving toward more flexible agricultural policies would generate substantial economic and environmental gains in a North Carolina diversified cropping region. But in a Washington-Idaho dryland grains region, only the use of relatively new and sometimes problematic alternative cropping systems permitted environmental and economic gains under policy reform. In both regions, a recoupling policy, which links government payments to resource-conserving farming practices, was needed to protect environmental quality when market prices for program crops were high.

Fertility concepts and adequate management for soils in tropical regions. Infoteca-e
RONQUIM, C. C..
Global agricultural production will have to increase by 70% until 2050 to provide for the increasing food supply needed for a growing population, with growing revenues and a shifting, protein-based diet (FAO, 2017). This production will demand over 120 million hectares of agricultural lands, and must rely on sustainable agricultural intensification and productivity increase in areas which are already used for agricultural purposes. Singularities of tropical agriculture require detailed knowledge of chemical and physical properties of the soils, with the aim of properly using supplies and of adequately maintaining soils, to render more profitable productions. Thus, evaluating the chemical fertility of soils is essential to define adequate amounts and types...

Organic and conventional tomato cropping systems Scientia Agricola
Bettiol,Wagner; Ghini,Raquel; Galvão,José Abrahão Haddad; Siloto,Romildo Cássio.
Among several alternative agricultural systems have been developed, organic agriculture has deserved increasing interest from. The objective of this paper was comparing both organic (OS) and conventional (CS) tomato cropping systems for varieties Débora and Santa Clara, through an interdisciplinary study. The experiment was set up in a randomized blocks design with six replicates, in a dystrophic Ultisol plots measuring 25 ´ 17 m. Cropping procedures followed by either local conventional or organic growers practices recommendations. Fertilization in the OS was done with organic compost, single superphosphate, dolomitic limes (5L, 60 g, and 60 g per pit), and sprayed twice a week with biofertilizer. Fertilization in the CS was done with 200 g 4-14-8 (NPK)...

Organic farming in Australia: An economist's perspective AgEcon
Marshall, Graham R..
Organic agriculture has emerged as an important contributor of ideas in the continuing Australian search for sustainable farming systems. Recognising this, choices arise over the need for government intervention to foster the development of organic approaches to agriculture. Even when the choice is to not intervene directly, an understanding of factors behind how voluntary conversion to this way of farming would help governments, farmer organisations and agribusiness to meet the demands of converting farmers for knowledge, inputs and services. The aim in this paper is to assist informed resolution of these questions.

Potential Environmental Contamination From Conventional and Alternative Cropping Systems in Northeast Kansas AgEcon
Koo, Seungmo; Diebel, Penelope L..
Surface-water contamination from agricultural chemicals is a problem in northeast Kansas. The objective of this study is to compare potential atrazine, nitrogen, and sediment loadings from regional conventional and alternative cropping systems. Results indicate that several alternative systems have lower loading levels for atrazine and sediment than the conventional system, but higher loading levels for nitrogen

Soil quality index in conventional and semi-ecological farms producing plantain ( Musa AAB Simmonds cv. Dominic Harton) in Anolaima-Cundinamarca, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Herrera-Culma,Roberth Alberto; Calderón-Rodríguez,Lina Isabel; Gutiérrez-Malaxechebarría,Álvaro Martín.
Abstract This research aimed to generate a soil quality index which have allowed to compare the effect of conventional and semi-ecological plantain farming systems. For its construction, we considered biometric data of near-to-harvest plants, physical, chemical and biological indicators which were evaluated using a principal components analysis; the weight of each indicator was calculated, and so were the response curves, establishing a minimum set of data which includes: sand percentage, sheet of water, pH, Nitrogen, organic carbon percentage, potassium, biodiversity conservation and microbial respiration, respectively. In fact, this index was validated in areas cultivated with plantain cv. Dominic Harton in farms located in the same taxonomic unit in...
